Young Jazz Giants

EN: Let’s start the musical adventure of “You traded the Bluesmobile for this?!” with an album released in 2004 by Los Angeles’ label, Birdman Records. Members of the young quartet: Kamasi Washington, saxophonist, Cameron Graves, pianist (16 years old at the recording time), the brothers Stephen and Ronald Bruner, respectively at the bass guitar and on the drums. Despite the birth certificate, I think that the “Jazz Giants” moniker is more than legitimate and you’ll realize that at the first listening to Yenne, the opening piece. Hard-bop and free jazz would be tags to define their sound that benefits from influences – or rather, from aptitudes – which go from hip-hop to punk: Stephen Bruners is a former member of the hardcore band Suicidal Tendencies along with Ronald and now collaborates with Sa-Ra, hip-hop producer duo from L.A.; Kamasi Washington has worked with Snoop Dogg, but also with Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers.
Young Jazz Giants’ jazz is sophisticated and exciting at the same time, on the one hand the technique, on the other hand the being black spirituality – proved by Stephen’s Songs spoken words – make that record an authentic gem.

...on commence
